London’s Calling our Harrogate Learners

Learners and staff from Harrogate Personalised Learning College recently enjoyed an unforgettable two-day educational adventure in London, packed with culture, confidence-building, and once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

Thanks to the generosity of the German YMCA, which donated accommodation through its Room for Opportunity programme, the group stayed right in the heart of the capital.

The trip began with a dramatic visit to the Tower of London, where learners took part in an interactive workshop exploring the story of Captain Blood and his daring attempt to steal the Crown Jewels. Full of acting, movement and even a little dancing, the session brought history to life.

Learners then headed to the National Gallery to explore the Wilton Triptych, guided by an expert who helped uncover the shapes, techniques and stories within the artwork. A special highlight was recognising paintings by Hans Holbein, linking perfectly with previous learning during Into Film Week and a trip to see Six the Musical.

After a well-earned pizza dinner, the group enjoyed a spectacular performance of The Lion King, before navigating the Tube back to their accommodation, a big achievement.

Day two included a visit to the Palace of Westminster, where learners explored both Houses of Parliament and met local MP Tom Gordon to share ideas for improving Starbeck. A stop at Downing Street, complete with a surprise appearance from Larry the Cat, added extra excitement.

The trip ended on a high with a ride on the London Eye, where learners showed incredible bravery and enjoyed breathtaking views before returning home feeling tired, proud, and full of unforgettable memories.
